Local government reports

The local government reports to provincial legislatures are our audit analysis and insight on municipalities and municipal entities across the nine provinces, mostly based on the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA).

The South African Constitution envisaged that citizens will live in cities, towns and settlements where they have access to clean water, sanitation, electricity, refuse services, and good roads and infrastructure. A country where their elected representatives in council will ensure that the rates and taxes they pay and the funds provided by national government for basic services and infrastructure development are accounted for and used for their intended purpose.

Our audits of local government give us unique insight into the failures, successes and challenges in local government and those that support them in national and provincial government. We can contribute to much-needed improvement in local government by sharing our insight widely, making recommendations, and advocating for commitment by leadership at all levels of government to play their part.

Our insight is aimed at empowering all role players in the accountability ecosystem to focus on those issues that will enable good financial and performance management, compliance with legislation and service delivery by municipalities.
